Weekly Q and A
Love Advice From Susie and Otto Collins
Q:
I have several women friends who are involved with men who were
raised in other cultures, such as the Middle East, which
is largely Muslim; therefore there is a religious and a
cultural "fence" to hurdle. Do you have any comments
about how to work through cultural differences? Do you encourage or discourage
inter-cultural relationships? Thank you, Mary A:
Mary, we believe that when two people come together, there are always big
differences between them. When there are cultural or religious differences it
just means that those differences stand out quickly, forcing you to deal with
them up front. We think that all couples face these challenges and that it
takes consciously honoring the other person's ways, as well as your own.
For the relationship to be successful, it will require both people to
communicate openly and honestly about their needs. We feel that people
come together to heal those parts of themselves that need to be healed and this
healing may very well take the form of being in a relationship with someone who
is dramatically different from you. We celebrate and appreciate what we
have learned from our differences in our relationship. To read an article
that deals with this specific issue, click

belittle another person. We are here to support, forgive and heal one
another." --Marianne Williamson
